- Fistula First A vascular access (a way to get the blood to and from the artificial kidney) is your lifeline if you choose hemodialysis. There are three types of access, and a fistula is preferred if you can have one. The grid below was compiled as part of Medicare's Fistula First program to increase the use of fistulas in the U.S.
