Patient stories: NxStage Reunion

NxStage Reunion

Home dialysis patients celebrate 2-year anniversary

In March, 2006, six of the eight people who volunteered to participate in the clinical trial of a new home hemodialysis machine—the NxStage Sytem One—met to celebrate in Berkeley, California. They congratulated their medical team, headed by Dr. John Moran of Satellite Healthcare, and each other for completing more than 2 years of successful home hemodialysis therapy with the NxStage System One.

The results of the trial, which officially ended in November 2004, earned NxStage FDA approval for home use of the System One on June 29, 2005. The results also demonstrated that home hemodialysis patients can hold down jobs, live active lives, and feel good. "I can't believe how well these patients are doing on daily therapy with NxStage," said Dr. Moran. "This is what patient care is all about!"

All eight patients from the trial have done well with the NxStage System One. Craig Battle finished his undergraduate degree, got a job, and is now pursuing a Masters degree. Jake Casey is enjoying an active retirement that includes travel. Susan Bower and her husband have decided to retire early and move to Oregon to be close to family.
