Get involved today! Support bills to help people with kidney disease

Visit our Legislative Action Center and ask your representative to sponsor:

  • HR 5321 - Access to Better Choice in Dialysis Act of 2006 - this bill would create a pilot project to pay for daily or nocturnal HD for up to 10,000 Americans over 5 years—and collect cost & outcomes data.
  • HR 1298/S. 635 - Kidney Care Quality and Improvement Act of 2005 - this bill would improve the ESRD payment system, create public and patient education, remove barriers to home dialysis, and more. NOTE: Senators from Idaho, Maine, Mississippi, Utah, and Wyoming are urgently needed. If you live here, please help!

Can't find short daily or nocturnal home HD? don't give up!

As of today, there are 101 nocturnal home HD programs in the U.S., and 102 short daily home HD programs. We've added 5 new ones this month! If you're seeking a center, first try our updated Coverage maps, then look in our Find a Center database. The closest center may not be in your own town—or even your own state. Still need help? Why do we need an NIH study on more frequent dialysis?

Hundreds of small, non-random studies have found that more frequent treatment is better for patients. But is that enough? View the presentation Dr. Michael Rocco gave at the NKF Spring Clinicals meeting and see for yourself.

Topic of the month—dialysis needles, self-cannulation, and the buttonhole technique

For many people on in-center HD, getting the needles placed is the most high stress part of a treatment. Lack of control over who puts in your needles can be a black cloud over your treatment days. Fear of someone new putting in your needles may even keep you from traveling. But you can reduce your stress and feel less pain by putting in your own needles. Learn about it here.

Michael and his wife found out about home dialysis on Home Dialysis Central

Michael's kidneys failed in 2000—after more than 30 years with Type 1 diabetes. Because he had a long time to research on-line and prepare, he made an informed choice about his treatment. He chose to do nocturnal home hemo. Read his story!
