This year's meeting of the American Society of Nephrology (Philadelphia, Nov. 9-12) includes 7 keyword listings on nocturnal hemodialysis and 9 on short daily hemo, including cutting-edge papers on better survival with daily treatment and the effects of nocturnal hemo on bone disease. Another 45 papers will cover topics related to PD.

Topic of the month: Medicare Part D

Prescription drug coverage is coming soon for people who have Medicare. Learn how it works, how home dialysis is affected, what your premiums are likely to be, and where you can find out more in this month's article.

Innovative papers in home dialysis

Inflammation and a condition called left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) are key risk factors for heart damage in people on dialysis. Drs. Ayus and Achinger have summarized their study which compared the heart effects of conventional vs. short daily hemo. They found that short daily treatments reduced phosphorus levels and LVH by more than 30%—and also reduced inflammation. Read all about it!
